With the new Land Rover Discovery 5 the design may have changed, but the ‘workhorse’ efficiency that defines Discovery, remains. The vehicle’s capabilities have been upgraded in a number of areas, for use both on and off-road. Wading Depth has been increased from 700mm to 900mm with added wade sensing technology, there’s a 3,500kg towing capacity and ground clearance is increased to 283mm for off-road journeys. When it comes to those off-road journeys, the renowned five-mode Terrain Response 2 and All-Terrain Progress Control systems are available as options with Hill Descent Control as standard, along with a host of other off-road technologies.

The tailgate has undergone a considerable change, with the split tailgate of past models being replaced with a full canopy, now opened via a powered gesture tailgate. The ‘split’ is however still available in the form of a Powered Inner Tailgate, which provides both load security when in place upright, or seating when lowered.
Step inside Discovery 5 and it becomes apparent that this vehicle is designed with all of the family in mind. Firstly, the cabin space inside has increased considerably – with 65% more storage space than Discovery 4. There’s more legroom, with 954mm and 851mm of space available in rows 2 and 3 respectively. These rows are also raised by 15mm and 45mm to allow for Land Rover’s stadium seating, providing a clearer outside view for passengers.
Entertainment features have been stepped up – as well as nine available USB ports, there’s also six 12v charging points strategically placed around the cabin. Rear-seat entertainment can be added and there’s in-vehicle 3G WiFi available which will allow up to 8 devices to connect at any one time*. Optional InControl Touch Pro offers a 10-inch touchscreen, voice recognition and services including InControl Touch Pro Navigation, InControl Connect Pro and InControl Protect. A 10-speaker and subwoofer Meridian Sound System means you can listen to crystal clear sound when connecting your MP3 player via Bluetooth, or using the CD-DVD player.
A major new technology feature of Discovery 5 is Remote Intelligent Seat Fold – this system allows you to configure the vehicle’s seating layout from inside or outside the vehicle. This is done using the vehicle’s mobile app, or via the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system. The flexible seating configurations allows seating for up to seven adults, as well as varying the load space capacity from anywhere between 258 to 2,406 litres.
To ensure it lives up to its predecessors’ ‘Tow Car of the Decade’ status, further towing aids have been added to ensure that Discovery 5 handles towing a trailer even better than in the past. The tow bar is deployed quickly, simply and electronically with the Advanced Tow Assist significantly reducing the driver’s workload when it comes to placing a trailer into position. The Surround Camera system gives you a full 360-degree view of any potential obstructions, and Trailer Stability Assist ensures that an unsteady or swaying trailer is brought under control as quickly and as safely as possible.
Whilst the design may now be sleeker than previously, the fifth-generation Discovery delivers all of the versatility and capability you expect from a Discovery ‘workhorse’. Wherever your next journey or adventure takes place, Discovery is the vehicle to get you there and while its design cues are a nod to the past, this is definitely a vehicle with the future in mind.
